It’s a real pleasure, even with excitement that we propose for the first time these recordings, which have nearly been forgotten after spending more than 5 years in limbo.
This unique disc from the duo formed by Christine DAAE and PAN is not more an album in itself than a series of games between two characters, where they explore their love of trip-hop and ambient, flirting sometimes with rock and traditional musics. They create pieces (in the first sense of the word) from samples ranging from jazz to psychedelic rock through contemporary music, and the effect is like a familiar dream half-awake, where it uses music and movies that you might have seen before.
With work on the textures and opaque atmospheres, PanDaaéMonium develops swampy pleasant ambience, distorts the samples, mixes grime sound to surf guitars, pierces the fog, and offers a cinema for the ears, which revisits some of the greatest films they love.
The whole album can be read like this: the use of hip-hop, not only its rhythms, but also its technical copy-paste as a base of each piece, PanDaaéMonium creates a world dense and fascinating, where there’s no defined musical genres, but only shifting sonic textures and styles. The multiple layers of samples and musical genres are the keys to understanding the work of the duo. They rely on a historical basis, but their approach is more visual than musical. They use all techniques of the collage more than classical composition. PanDaaéMonium tended to treat hip-hop not as an explicit social protest, but as musical innovation most likely to approach the Surrealist collage.
The duo develops a musical that attempts to transport the surreality of their environment to the brain of the listener.
It is sometimes threatening, it is often exciting, and despite its dark atmospheres, this album can’t be regarded as something sinister. It would be the sonic equivalent of a trip narrated by two scamps who can’t afford to keep the secret any longer.
